Whole Wheat Sopapillas

Breakfast on the weekend is the best!  That is when we have time to cook something.  A lot of times we have sopapillas.  I love sopapillas!  They are so easy and so good.

Whole Wheat Sopapillas

 

We have tried many recipes.  My husband feels like he has succeeded  if they puff up.  These puff really good most of the time.  And they taste the best.

You can cut the dough like this or use cookie cutters, make it fun for the kids.  Get as creative as you want.  Make eating healthy fun for the kids so they don’t know this is healthy.

We always fry them in Olive Oil.  You could use coconut oil if you wanted instead.

Whole Wheat Sopapillas

3 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 Tblsp butter
1 1/4 cup warm whole milk
Extra Virgin Olive Oil for frying

In large bowl blend dry ingredients. Add in butter. Cut in butter with 2 knives until flour is crumbly. Add milk all at once and mix dough quickly with a fork or your hands until the dough forms a ball. Don’t over mix. Cover dough with a towel or plastic wrap to let rest for 15 minutes. Heat oil on medium heat. Roll dough to 1/8″ thickness. Cut into shapes. Fry in heated oil. Enjoy with butter and honey.

  1. Do you ever use sprouted wheat flour? I’ve heard so many good things about it but haven’t seen it for sale. Also would you share your bread recipe?
