Several years ago someone gave me a great baked beans recipe. It had ketchup, brown sugar (lots of brown sugar), molasses, etc. It was so good! Probably because of all the sugar!
We are having a family get together this weekend and one of the menu items is baked beans. When you are eating healthy and not eating refined sugar, baked beans are a big NO. So . . . instead of going without I decided to make my own. I think I have succeeded!
One thing to remember is you need to let the beans bake. The best is to let them bake at a low temperature for a long time.
The other key is the sauce. Because ketchup has sugar that is out. And of course the brown sugar is out.
Another thing is the bacon! I have yet to find a bacon that is not cured in sugar. So. . . that is out.
First, you want to chop 1/2 medium onion. And 2 garlic gloves, minced. You will also need 2 15.5 0z cans of Navy Beans.
And last but most important is barbecue sauce. You will want to make your own barbecue sauce so you don’t have the refined sugar. I have a great, easy recipe HERE.
Add a little water and bake in your oven for 2 hours at 300 degrees.
Easy! And delicious!
Healthy Baked Beans
1 14.5 oz can tomato sauce
1 6 oz. can tomato paste
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup molasses

1 tsp paprika
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
3 15.5 oz cans Navy Beans
1/2 medium onion, chopped
2 gloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cup water
- Make barbecue sauce by putting all ingredients in medium sauce pan over medium low heat for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Place beans, onion, garlic in casserole dish. Put enough barbecue sauce to cover beans. Add water and mix well.
