In the summer of 2007 I started feeling pain all over my body. I thought it was my thyroid being off kilter again. After blood tests we determined my thyroid was fine. My doctor told me to go to a rheumatalogist. My doctor’s mother had fibromyalgia and she thought maybe I could have it too.
After a lot of tests I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Arthritis. The arthritis was in my back. Of course the doctor wanted to prescribe medication for the pain and inflammation.
I am not a huge fan of medication because of the side affects so I chose not to take any medicine. As the years went by the pain got worse. My back and neck always hurt from the arthritis. My whole body hurt from the fibromyalgia.
I could not stand at the sink and do dishes with my back the way it was. The all over pain was not a picnic either. My husband would give me a little love pat on my hip and it felt like he hit me. I did not want my children to snuggle with me or touch me because I hurt. That was not good for my family.
In the summer of 2011 my husband started doing some research on what I could do to help with the pain naturally. My husband found a book and asked me to order it for him. This is the book we read.
We had a family reunion in Utah in August. We were living in Texas at the time. The drive is about 21 hours. There was no way I would be able to sit in a car for that long! So, I flew and met my family in Utah.
That week at the family reunion my husband read the whole book. He was hopeful that we had an answer! Just before we left to head back home my husband said “When we get home I want you to try this. Let’s see what happens.”
The this he was talking about is basically a whole foods diet. No sugar, white flour, preservatives, corn syrup, etc. I have a sweet tooth. Are you kidding me? You want me to what? Not by myself. I was NOT going to watch my family eat good, tasty food while I eat this new diet. I also thought there was no way the food I ate would make a difference in my arthritis and fibromyalgia.
Boy was I wrong!
My hubby said he would do it with me. The following weekend we went to the local grocery store and spent a long time looking at labels of food. We bought fruits, vegetables, some meat, whole milk, butter, raisins, nuts, beans, grains, sour cream, cream cheese, salsa, coconut oil, olive oil, honey. When we arrived home our daughters looked at the food and were not too excited. To tell you the truth I was not excited either but it was worth a try. If it did not work then I could go back to eating the way I always have.
I craved sugar! It was tough. When I craved sugar I would grab some fruit or a teaspoon of molasses. I know it sounds weird to eat molasses, most people do not like it, but it worked for me. There was a lot of adjusting. I did not know how I was going to eat my oatmeal without brown sugar! Well, I quickly learned that oatmeal with honey, cashews, raisins, cinnamon and milk was pretty good. We found some cookie recipes we could adjust. I did not know if I was going to be able to do this. Then guess what?
After two weeks my pain was noticeably better. Like half the pain! No way!!! No pain! I can do this! That was almost 6 years ago and in those 6 years I have had 3 days of pain. I am grateful every day that I can run around with my grandsons. We go hiking together as a family. I can do the dishes! My hubby can give me love taps and I feel his love instead of the pain. I can drive halfway across the country. My kids can hug me! I can do so many things!
My goal is to take you through my journey to be healthy and free of pain. I will share recipes. The question I get asked the most is “what do you eat?” I will share lots of recipes. I am excited to share my journey with you!
